Helen Skiadas - Director
Born on Sunday Island, Western Australia, from Worora and Walmajarri families, Helen was raised in the Goldfields and other parts of country Western Australia.
Helen has wide experience in all areas of Aboriginal life and culture and maintains strong relationships with Kimberley and Goldfields family and friends.
Helen has 40 years’ experience in teaching mainly in the area of Kindergarten and Preschool in both regional and urban areas of Western Australia. Most of these years of teaching were in community based Preschools with very high cohort of Aboriginal students, carrying out the role of Teacher in Charge. In this role Helen worked with parents and the local community and schools to improve educational outcomes for her students.
Through her work as a teacher and as an Aboriginal person, Helen has firsthand experience with the complex social issues faced by Aboriginal people. Helen speaks Wongatha, (Aboriginal language).
Helen has a strong interest in Aboriginal child welfare and improving outcomes in education for Aboriginal children.
In 2013 Helen retired after 40 years of teaching at community kindergartens around Western Australia. Helen worked in Derby for 20 years including 15 years as the Teacher in Charge of Mowanujum Community Preschool and then in Perth for 20 years as Teacher in Charge at Bentley and later Coolbellup Community Preschools.
Helen has a Bachelor of Education from Edith Cowan University.
